In the summer of 2021, concern grew for 29-year-old Anthony John Jaworsky, a resident of Catawba County, North Carolina, who was last seen by his family in the Conover area on July 13th. Reports indicate he was also seen in the late hours of that same day at a residence in the adjacent Burke County. Known to his loved ones as 'Tony' or 'Ant,' Jaworsky was a male with black hair, brown eyes, and several distinctive tattoos, including a cross under his left eye and the word
'ITALIANO' on his stomach.
Two days after he was last seen, a troubling discovery was made. On the morning of July 15, 2021, Jaworsky's 2015 Chevrolet Cruz was found abandoned on the shoulder of Interstate 40 eastbound in Iredell County. The vehicle's hazard lights were still flashing, adding a sense of urgency and mystery to his sudden disappearance. Investigators learned that he may have been traveling to the Greensboro area from where he was last spotted in Burke County. The Catawba County Sheriff's Office initiated a missing person investigation, seeking help from the public to piece together his last known movements.
As the investigation continued, a significant development emerged in July 2022. Law enforcement from Catawba and Burke counties, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant at a residence on Curley's Fish Camp Road in Hildebran, the last known place Jaworsky was seen. During the search, investigators, with the assistance of a dog trained to find human remains, unearthed evidence that led them to issue an arrest warrant for a Hickory resident named Mark Anthony Ortiz. The warrant was for felonious disposal of a body and felonious obstruction of justice. While authorities have not confirmed Jaworsky's death, the charges against Ortiz suggest a grim turn in the case. As of early 2023, law enforcement was still actively searching for Ortiz, and the investigation into Anthony Jaworsky's disappearance remains ongoing.
