He had short brown hair, a grey 'goatee' style beard, and brown eyes. When he was last seen, he was wearing a grey sweatshirt and, notably, a black sling on his left arm. The circumstances of his disappearance were initially unclear, other than that he had left his residence in a van.
In the days following the report, the Burke County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from Burke County Emergency Management, Burke County Rescue, and the Icard Township Fire/Rescue, launched extensive search efforts. Multiple searches were conducted on February 22 and 23, but they yielded no signs of Mr. Phillips, and his whereabouts remained a mystery.
