Jessica Jo Marshik, a 36-year-old woman, was last in contact with family and friends on December 14, 2021, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her disappearance was described as extremely out of character, as she was known to regularly check in with loved ones. Marshik lived by herself in a secured apartment building in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood of Southeast Minneapolis. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance were immediately concerning to those who knew her.

Family members, after not hearing from her for a few days, went to her second-floor apartment for a welfare check on December 19th. They discovered her apartment door unlocked and ajar. Inside, all of her personal belongings were found, including her purse, wallet, keys, phone, and laptop. Even her winter coat and boots were left behind, which was particularly unusual given the cold December weather in Minnesota. Her car was also found parked near her apartment building. Marshik was known to frequent local bars, restaurants, and stores in her neighborhood on foot. Friends described her as a "lively and energetic" and "passionate and spunky" individual who was also a dedicated activist with the Racial Justice Network.

The investigation into her disappearance was active and ongoing, with Minneapolis police working with her family. Her friends, concerned about the pace of the investigation, took matters into their own hands, distributing thousands of flyers throughout the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood and canvassing for any information. They also planned a candlelight vigil to mark one month since she was last seen. A friend noted that Marshik had been going through a difficult few months, which may have made her more vulnerable. In late January 2022, a social media page dedicated to finding Jessica announced that based on definitive evidence provided by the police, she was unfortunately presumed to be deceased. The family requested privacy, and no further details about the evidence were publicly shared.
