In July of 2022, 69-year-old Mary Dawn Wilson was spending time with friends near Healy, Alaska. She was last seen at their residence on the morning of July 12th. At the time, Wilson was caring for the two-year-old child of a close friend while the mother was away working at a mine in a rural part of the state. Relatives have stated that they consider Wilson to be the child's grandmother.
Two days after she was last seen, in the early morning hours of July 14th, her vehicle was discovered abandoned and stuck approximately 6.8 miles down the remote and rugged Stampede Trail. Inside the locked car was the two-year-old child, who was thankfully found to be in good health. It is believed the child had been in the vehicle for about two days.
Authorities believe that after her Ford Focus became stuck, Wilson made the decision to leave the child in the car and venture out to find help. Evidence suggests she walked further down the trail, away from the Parks Highway. Some of her personal items were discovered at approximately the 7.8-mile marker of the trail, a mile from where her car was found. This discovery prompted an extensive and immediate search of the surrounding area. The region is isolated, near Denali National Park and Preserve, with the nearest home several miles away. The Stampede Trail itself is known for being treacherous and is the same area where the "Into the Wild" bus was once located.
Despite a comprehensive search effort involving Alaska State Troopers, Village Public Safety Officers, multiple search and rescue teams including Solstice Search Dogs, Mat-Su Search & Rescue, and Alaska Wilderness Search & Rescue, no further evidence of Wilson's whereabouts has been found. The search utilized law enforcement and military personnel, rescue dogs, all-terrain vehicles, drones, and helicopters. Unfortunately, recent rains had washed away any potential footprints, hampering tracking efforts. After days of intensive searching with no new leads, the active search was transitioned to a reactive one, meaning search efforts would only resume if new information or evidence emerged. At the time of the initial investigation, authorities stated there was no evidence to suggest foul play was involved in her disappearance.
