In the late evening of September 22, 2005, 37-year-old Charlene Finley Johnson and her brother-in-law, Art Johnson, 42, departed from Dillingham, Alaska, for a duck hunting trip. They set out around 8 p.m. in a 16-foot Lund boat, accompanied by a yellow Labrador named Flash, heading northeast of the city. The weather that evening was reported to be poor, a factor that would later prove significant. When the two hunters did not return after midnight, concern grew, and Alaska State Troopers were notified of their overdue return, sparking the beginning of a search. The following morning, a sign of trouble emerged when the dog, Flash, was discovered alive and swimming in the Dillingham boat harbor. This discovery intensified the search efforts for Charlene and Art. Later that day, around 1 p.m., their overturned skiff was found on a sandbar approximately 5.5 miles from the boat harbor, in the opposite direction of their intended destination. Additionally, debris from the hunting trip was located about half a mile from the harbor. Charlene was possibly wearing orange and green rain gear and neoprene chest waders at the time of her disappearance. It is unknown if either she or Art were wearing personal flotation devices. Despite the efforts of Alaska State Troopers, family, and friends, the search for Charlene and Art Johnson yielded no further signs of the missing hunters. After days of searching the waters and coastline, the official search was suspended. Both Charlene and Art are presumed to have drowned in a boating accident. The case remains a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness and the tragic, abrupt end to what began as a routine hunting excursion. The discovery of their dog alive in the harbor, followed by the finding of the overturned boat and scattered debris, paints a fragmented and heartbreaking picture of their final moments.
