A man remains missing after a fishing boat ran aground on Prince of Wales Island Sunday afternoon, according to Alaska Wildlife Troopers. The boat was the “Randi Jo.” There were two adults on the boat — a man and a woman — and a dog.

Troopers say the boat had run aground around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday near Point Baker, about 142 miles south of Juneau. Both people and the dog were able to escape the boat, get into a skiff and make it to a small rock island. Then, the boat and skiff w ...Read More

On a bright and clear morning, Sunday, November 27, 2022, 27-year-old Arne Dahl and his girlfriend, Kelsey Leak, set out from their homestead in Point Baker, Alaska. They were aboard Dahl's 39-foot wooden fishing vessel, the Randi Jo, on a routine trip to gather firewood. The couple, who had been living an off-grid life in the remote community on Prince of Wales Island, were accompanied by their golden retriever, Mili, and Leak's seven-year-old pet parrot, Petrie. The waters were calm, and the day was sunny as they made their way back to town, a seemingly perfect day that gave no hint of the tragedy that was about to unfold. The journey took a sudden and catastrophic turn when Leak was jolted awake from a nap by the force of the Randi Jo slamming into something. The boat had struck a rock, tearing a large hole in its port side. Realizing the vessel would sink, the couple and their dog scrambled into a skiff they had in tow. As Dahl quickly boarded the sinking Randi Jo to retrieve important papers, a wave pushed the small skiff underneath the larger boat, sinking the skiff as well. With both vessels lost, they were forced to swim for their lives in the cold Alaskan water, spotting a small, rocky island known as West Rock nearby. They managed to make it to the rock, but the ordeal had just begun. Shivering and in shock on the tiny rock, Dahl made the fateful decision to try and swim to the larger, nearby Joe Mace Island for help. He was concerned for Leak and believed he could make the swim to summon a rescue. Despite Leak's pleas for him to stay, he was determined. Promising her he would come back for her, he swam off, and she watched as his head disappeared into the distance. That was the last time anyone saw Arne Dahl. Leak and her dog, Mili, endured a harrowing 24 hours on the rock in freezing temperatures before being rescued by a passing fishing boat the next day. An extensive search was launched by the U.S. Coast Guard and Wrangell Search and Rescue, but they found no trace of Dahl. The search efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and Arne Dahl, a young fisherman at home on the water, was presumed to have been lost to the sea.
