In early January of 2021, concern grew for a 12-year-old girl from Norfolk, Virginia, named Keasia Williams. She was last seen on the evening of January 7th in the 1700 block of Green Leaf Drive. At the time she went missing, Keasia was described as being approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing around 120 pounds, and she had long braids. The Norfolk Police Department issued a public appeal for assistance, sharing her description and photograph in the hopes that community members might provide information that could lead to her whereabouts. The initial belief by authorities was that Keasia may have run away from home. This classification did not lessen the urgency of the search, as any child missing from their home is considered to be in a vulnerable situation. The police department actively sought help from the public, a common and often crucial step in missing juvenile cases. The days that a child is missing are filled with anxiety and fear for their family and loved ones, who await any news. The community was asked to be vigilant and to report any potential sightings to the non-emergency dispatch line. Fortunately, this story has a positive resolution. On January 13, 2021, the Norfolk Police Department announced that Keasia Williams had been located and was safe. The brief period she was missing was one of great concern, but her safe recovery brought relief to her family, the community, and the law enforcement officials involved in the search. This case serves as an overview of the collaborative effort that occurs when a child goes missing, involving a police investigation and a public call to action, which thankfully in this instance, concluded with the child being found safely.
