In the community of Amelia, Ohio, a 72-year-old man named Thomas Mills, known affectionately as Tommy, was a familiar and cherished resident. Despite facing challenges including autism, cognitive disabilities, and mobility issues, Tommy lived a full and independent life in his own home at the Amelia Court Apartments. He was a man of routine and faith, known for his love of sports and his devoted attendance at the Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church with his family. Tommy was a friendly and well-liked person who, despite his challenges, was able to provide for himself and insisted on his independence. His small stature, standing at about four feet eleven inches, was a notable characteristic, as was his love for his two pet dogs whom he adored. The circumstances surrounding Tommy’s disappearance in early December 2022 remain unclear and have left his family and community with unanswered questions. He was last seen at his apartment complex on Ohio Pike. Surveillance video from a nearby store later showed him leaving his apartment late one evening, appearing to carry items towards the dumpsters in the parking lot, a habitual activity for him. Concern grew when he could not be located, and it was discovered he had left behind his cellular phone and, most uncharacteristically, his two beloved dogs. At the time he went missing, he may have been wearing a black jacket, a red t-shirt, and light-colored pants. Immediately following his disappearance, an extensive search was launched by the Pierce Township Police Department, search and rescue teams, and numerous volunteers from the community. Believing that his known habit of looking through dumpsters might be a key factor, authorities undertook the immense task of searching the local landfill, meticulously sifting through thousands of tons of trash in hopes of finding him. Searchers also combed a five-mile radius around his apartment, including nearby woods and ponds, but found no trace of the missing man. Despite investigators reviewing over 70 hours of video surveillance and dedicating more than 2,700 man-hours to the search, no solid leads on his whereabouts emerged. The case remains a painful mystery for his loved ones and the law enforcement officials who dedicated so much to finding him; it is a search for a cherished community member who vanished, leaving behind a life of independence and faith without explanation.
