Summary based on 1 source
In the early summer of 1973, 23-year-old Theresa Anne Pettit, an Edmonton Journal reporter also known as Terri, and her husband, Ron Yakimchuk, embarked on a cross-country adventure. The couple left Edmonton, Alberta, on June 9, 1973, in their distinctive 1959 Volkswagen Beetle, which was red with a green hood and fender. Packed with their belongings, including clothes, books, and a three-meter white kayak strapped to the roof, they set off with plans to attend a wedding in Montreal on June 16 and then continue to the Maritimes. Ron, 27, hoped to find a teaching position, while Terri intended to continue her career in journalism.

Their journey eastward was marked by a couple of brief stops. They visited friends near Brandon, Manitoba, and the following day, made a stop in Dryden, Ontario. From Dryden, they mailed a postcard to a friend in Edmonton with the single word, "Nyah". This was an inside joke, as Terri had made a bet with the friend that their well-worn Volkswagen would not make it that far. This postcard, sent on June 10, 1973, would be the last time anyone heard from Theresa or Ron. They never arrived at the wedding in Montreal, and all communication with family and friends ceased. Their bank accounts were left untouched, and neither they nor their vehicle were ever seen again.

The complete and sudden disappearance of Theresa and Ron has left a void in the lives of their loved ones for decades. There was some speculation that the couple might have planned to travel to Europe, but authorities noted that only Terri had a passport. Another theory suggested they may have altered their route to avoid the challenging Trans-Canada Highway, possibly crossing into the United States at International Falls and heading towards Duluth, Minnesota, with the intention of re-entering Canada later. Despite investigations, no trace of the couple or their Volkswagen Beetle with Alberta license plate CA3-262 has ever been found. The case remains a painful mystery, an unsettling story of a young couple who set out to start a new chapter of their lives, only to vanish without a trace somewhere on the vast Canadian landscape. After seven years with no contact or leads, Theresa Pettit and Ron Yakimchuk were legally declared deceased in 1980.
