Scott Paul Hayes, a 19-year-old from Stafford, California, was last seen on January 8, 1996. Hayes had informed his roommate that he was planning to travel to Southern California to visit his girlfriend. He packed all his belongings into his maroon Chevrolet Sonoma pickup truck and departed. However, the next day, on January 9, his truck was found abandoned along Highway 101 in Redcrest, California. The truck was locked, out of fuel, and contained all of his personal belongings.
There were witness reports of a man matching Hayes' description seen in Redcrest early that morning. The individual had mentioned running out of gas and was given a ride, but after acting strangely, he was dropped off under a nearby overpass. A few other reports suggested that Hayes might have been spotted at a motel in Rio Dell, California, where he was again described as acting oddly. He was denied a room and was last seen walking north along Wildwood Avenue.
Despite these sightings, no further leads emerged, and Hayes has not been heard from since. His case remains unsolved, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
