In the quiet town of Lockport, New York, 33-year-old Sheryl Lyn Rucci was last seen on the evening of August 9, 2005, at her apartment on Lincoln Avenue. A mother to a young daughter, Sheryl's sudden disappearance left her family bewildered and concerned. The scene she left behind offered few clues; her apartment was found neat and tidy, with her purse and other personal belongings untouched. The only thing missing were her keys, suggesting she may have intended to return shortly. Investigators used bloodhounds to trace her scent, which led them down the road to a local Skateland before the trail went cold. At the time she went missing, Sheryl was described as a white female with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'10' and weighing around 120 pounds. She had several distinguishing tattoos, including a rose with her daughter's name, 'Ashley,' on her ankle and another design with the name 'Roger' on her lower back.

The circumstances surrounding Sheryl's disappearance were complicated by her involvement in a criminal case against her ex-boyfriend, Roger L. Hueber, a former prison guard. Sheryl was scheduled to testify against Hueber just two weeks after she was last seen in a case involving child sex abuse allegations. Initially, both law enforcement and her family considered the possibility that she had gone into hiding to avoid testifying. This theory gained some traction when, three weeks after she vanished, Sheryl was indicted as a co-defendant in the case against Hueber. However, as time passed with no word from her, those who knew her best became convinced that she would never have voluntarily abandoned her daughter. Hueber later pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was released from prison in 2010.

Despite the passage of years, Sheryl Lyn Rucci's case remains unsolved, and foul play is suspected. Investigators no longer believe she ran away and have continued to treat her disappearance as an active case. There have been unconfirmed sightings of her in the Lockport area over the years, but none have led to a breakthrough in the investigation. Her family, particularly her daughter, has been left without answers, grappling with the profound loss of a mother who vanished without a trace. The overview of this case reveals a distressing situation where a woman disappeared under suspicious circumstances shortly before she was to be a key witness in a serious criminal trial. The initial belief that she may have fled was eventually replaced by the more sinister suspicion of foul play, leaving a lasting impact on her loved ones and the community.
