On October 9, 1987, around 9:00 p.m., Phillip Orvis took his boat out on Lake Winnipeg from Matheson Island in Manitoba. He was on his way to his fishing camp on Black Bear Island. By the time he left, the water on the lake was very rough. Phillip could not swim and was known to never wear a life jacket. His boat was found the next day.
