On October 13, 2000, two boats set off on the Churchill River, bound for Granville Lake in Manitoba. One of the boats began taking on water and experiencing engine trouble. Most of the occupants of the disabled boat transferred to the other boat. However, William Linklater stayed on the disabled boat, attempting to start it. The missing boat was located the next day; however, William was not aboard. He is presumed to have drowned.
