On the night of October 30, 1998, a date known as Devil's Night, 18-year-old Jake Nicholas Just attended a party in a residential area in the north end of Midland, Ontario. Later that evening, sometime around midnight, Jake left the gathering to walk home with friends. The group was walking together when Jake decided to part ways with his friend, opting for a familiar shortcut through a wooded trail while his friend chose to stay on the well-lit street.
