On a cold day in March of 1976, a young mother named Diane Marie Bourne vanished from her home in Ashton, Ontario. The 22-year-old female lived with her husband, Gordon Bourne, and their two young children on a farm property that also housed a wrecking yard on Kidd Road. Diane was a dedicated government employee who commuted daily to her job in Ottawa. On March 6, 1976, she was last seen at her residence, reportedly wearing a 3/4 length green and white winter coat. Her husband later told police that he had followed her footprints out of the house and down the snowy laneway, leading him to believe she had been picked up by a vehicle. At the time of her disappearance, one of her two small children was in the hospital. For a young mother so deeply connected to her children and her father, with whom she shared a close bond, to leave without a word was considered entirely out of character. Decades passed without any sign of Diane, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. The official investigation into her disappearance continued, but leads were scarce. The case, however, saw a significant development in 2007, more than 30 years after she was last seen. The Ontario Provincial Police descended upon the Kidd Road property, conducting an extensive, large-scale search of the farmhouse and wrecking yard where Diane had lived. During this search, which involved major crime and canine units, investigators arrested her husband, Gordon Bourne. The charges were related to weapons, and he was later released on bail. Despite the major police effort that lasted for several days, the search of the property yielded no clues as to Diane's whereabouts and no sign of her was found. The disappearance of Diane Marie Bourne remains an open and active investigation, a cold case that has spanned nearly five decades. Despite extensive police work and the passage of time, she has never been located, and the circumstances surrounding her vanishing are still largely unknown. Foul play is suspected in her case. Her daughter, who was only a toddler when her mother went missing, continues to keep her memory alive in the hope that someone, somewhere, holds the piece of information that could finally bring closure and provide answers to what happened to the young mother who seemingly vanished into thin air all those years ago.
