His physical description was notable; he stood at five feet nine inches tall, weighing around 165 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, a thin moustache, and visibly decaying teeth. He also had several distinguishing marks, including a scar on the top of his left hand, another on his right hip from an injury sustained in World War II, and multiple tattoos. These included a nude woman entwined with a snake on his left forearm, and on his right forearm, a bird with a "Mother" banner alongside a Canadian flag and maple leaf. A confusing account emerged later that evening when a friend inquired about his whereabouts and was told that John had gone to the Golden Lake Reserve with two other men; however, police did not believe this to be a credible lead. Another conflicting report states he was last seen in Thorold and planned to take a bus to Hamilton. Despite the passage of time, John Begolo's disappearance remains an unsolved case. He never boarded the bus he spoke of, and extensive searches conducted by police over the years have yielded no clues as to what became of him after he left the Eganville Hotel.
