In what became a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, the story of 24-year-old Murdo Baker unfolded not as a missing person case, but as a homicide that concluded a young life far too soon. Originally from South Indian Lake, Murdo was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, when his life was cut short in March of 2024. On the morning of March 19th, he was discovered with serious injuries inside an apartment building on Main Street, situated between Sutherland and Flora avenues. Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:15 a.m., and Murdo was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in a critical state. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The initial report of an unresponsive male quickly transitioned into a full-fledged homicide investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service. Investigators from the Homicide Unit began to piece together the events that led to Murdo's untimely death. It was determined that he had been socializing with a group of people at the Main Street apartment in the hours leading up to the tragic incident. The gathering took a fatal turn when an altercation broke out, resulting in Murdo being shot. The police worked diligently to identify those present and to understand the sequence of events that culminated in this act of violence. Their investigation led them to identify a suspect who had fled the city after the shooting. The investigation progressed with the identification of a 28-year-old suspect, Dyson Irvin Sumner. A warrant was issued for his arrest on the charge of second-degree murder, and police released his name to the public, cautioning that he was considered dangerous. With the assistance of the Saskatoon Police Service, the suspect was located and taken into custody on April 20, 2024. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced warrants for weapon possession and multiple counts of failing to comply with release conditions. The case of Murdo Baker is a somber reminder of a life lost to violence, a narrative that shifted from a search for a missing individual to a quest for justice for a young man whose life was tragically taken. The investigation concluded that Murdo Baker was the victim of a fatal shooting following a dispute, leading to the arrest and charging of a suspect.
