In the summer of 2023, a then 29-year-old woman named Shanice Ogata-Staudinger vanished from the picturesque, yet rugged, coastline of Puna, Hawaii. On the morning of July 9th, she and a relative went to a familiar local spot known as 'Hau Bush,' located in the area of Kahakai Boulevard and Papio Street in Pāhoa, to engage in the traditional practice of picking ‘opihi, a type of limpet. At some point during their time on the rocky shore, Shanice became separated from her companion.
When she failed to appear at their designated meeting spot later that day, concern mounted, and she was reported missing that evening.
Immediate and extensive search efforts were launched in the wake of her disappearance. The Hawaiʻi Fire Department, the United States Coast Guard, and local police collaborated in a comprehensive search of the land, sea, and air surrounding the area where she was last seen. The challenging terrain, characterized by steep cliffs with limited access to the ocean, complicated the search. Despite the deployment of a scent-discriminating canine and the fire department's helicopter, the initial, intensive three-day search yielded no trace of Shanice, and was eventually called off. Authorities had no confirmation that she had ever entered the water. She was last seen wearing a black tank top or tube top and blue jean pants.
In the months and years that have followed, the case of Shanice Ogata-Staudinger has remained open, her absence a persistent source of concern for her family and community. Described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall and around 150 pounds with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a distinctive dollar sign tattoo on her left cheek, her image has been widely circulated. Law enforcement has continued to investigate, following up on various tips and conducting interviews with her friends, family, and known associates. The police have periodically renewed their public appeals for any information regarding her whereabouts, as her family continues to hope for answers.
