In the late summer of 1993, 16-year-old Sequoya Rebecca Vargas was preparing to start her junior year at Pahoa High School in Hawaii. She was a creative and gifted teenager with aspirations of attending art college. On August 22, 1993, she told her mother she would be spending the night with a friend. The two girls were hitchhiking when they were picked up by a man named Richard Damian Serrano.
After dropping off Sequoya's friend, Serrano took Sequoya to a house in Nanawale Estates where his acquaintances, Matthew Gibbs and Jason McCubbins, were present. Sequoya had some familiarity with Gibbs but had not previously met the other two men. This was the last time she was ever seen.
Initially, law enforcement treated Sequoya's disappearance as a runaway case, a suggestion her family strongly contested due to their close relationship with her. The family, frustrated with the police's initial response, launched their own investigation, organizing search parties and raising funds for a private investigator. Their efforts identified the men last seen with Sequoya. A month after she went missing, the case was reclassified as a homicide. The breakthrough came when Matthew Gibbs confessed to his involvement in Sequoya's disappearance. Gibbs detailed a horrific sequence of events, stating that he, McCubbins, and Serrano had given Sequoya alcohol mixed with prescription cough medicine, causing her to lose consciousness. He admitted that the three of them then sexually assaulted her.
According to Gibbs' confession, when Sequoya regained consciousness and began to scream, she was beaten and placed in the trunk of a car. They drove her to McKenzie Park and threw her from a 20-foot sea cliff. When they heard her moaning a few minutes later, Serrano allegedly went down the cliff and swam her out to sea, returning alone. In the wake of these revelations, Jason McCubbins pleaded no contest to kidnapping and manslaughter, while Gibbs pleaded to sexual assault. Richard Serrano, who had fled Hawaii shortly after Sequoya's disappearance, was eventually arrested in Mexico in 1999. He was subsequently convicted of kidnapping, second-degree murder, and sexual assault. Despite the convictions, Sequoya's body has never been recovered. The case took another mysterious turn when Sequoya's ex-boyfriend, who was scheduled to testify at the trial, disappeared and has not been seen since.
