In the spring of 1983, a young mother named Joan Vanessa Mason, just 19 years old, vanished from her neighborhood in Highland Park, Michigan. On April 25th of that year, she left her home on Buena Vista Street to take a short walk to a nearby corner store at Hamilton and Glendale avenues to pick up a few things for herself and her four-year-old son. Known to her loved ones as Jo Ann, she was a college student who was deeply devoted to her young son, and it was considered highly uncharacteristic of her to leave him for any significant length of time. Her family grew worried as darkness began to fall and she had not returned from what should have been a brief errand. Joan Vanessa Mason was never seen or heard from again. The circumstances surrounding Joan's disappearance are troubling and point to the possibility of foul play. According to a witness, a man was seen getting out of a car and approaching Joan near the store. Another account from a friend who was with her stated that Joan's ex-boyfriend and some other men drove up, and the ex-boyfriend got out and was seen walking down the street with Joan. This ex-boyfriend had a history of violence towards her; shortly before she went missing, he had reportedly kidnapped and severely beaten her, resulting in her hospitalization. Despite this history of abuse, he was never officially named a suspect in her case. The man who was seen approaching her has never been identified. Years have turned into decades, and Joan's case has grown cold, complicated by the passage of time and the loss of original case files. The ex-boyfriend who was a person of interest has since passed away. Despite the heartbreak of not knowing, her family has continued to search for answers, holding onto hope for closure. Her mother has kept her memory alive, creating a small shrine for her missing daughter on her birthday each year. The Highland Park Police Department considers the case to still be open, but there have been no significant leads or arrests made. The lack of digital records from that era has made the investigation challenging for law enforcement. Overall, the disappearance of Joan Vanessa Mason is a deeply concerning case of a young, devoted mother who vanished under suspicious circumstances, leaving behind a family desperate for answers and a community with a long-unsolved mystery.
