In the winter of 2024, a heart-wrenching story began to unfold in Detroit, Michigan, with the disappearance of 13-year-old Na’ziyah Harris. On January 9th, the young girl, a student at J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy, followed her usual routine, taking the bus to school. That day, however, would be her last. After school, Na'ziyah was seen meeting up with a man named Jarvis Ramon Butts, who was the father of her aunt's children.
The two, along with a coworker of Butts, traveled from an auto repair shop to Ypsilanti and then back to Detroit. Later that evening, Butts checked into a motel, but Na’ziyah never returned to her home. Her adoptive mother and biological grandmother, Annette Harris, grew worried when she didn't come home by 6:00 p.m. and began searching for her, but she officially reported her missing to the police the following morning.
The investigation into Na'ziyah's disappearance quickly intensified. Authorities discovered several of her personal items, including the clothing she was last seen wearing, her school ID, and earphones, near the Rouge River in the vicinity of 7 Mile and Berg Road. The condition of her clothes, which appeared damaged, suggested a struggle had taken place. Suspicion soon fell upon Jarvis Butts. Initially, Butts denied having seen Na'ziyah on the day she went missing, a claim that was later proven false. Investigators uncovered a disturbing history, alleging that Butts had been sexually abusing and grooming the young girl since 2022. It was also believed that Na'ziyah may have been pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Further investigation into Butts's activities revealed damning evidence, including his internet search history for information on abortions and his phone records placing him at key locations on the day Na'ziyah vanished.
The case against Jarvis Butts culminated in his arrest and a slew of charges, including first-degree premeditated murder and multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct. In February 2026, less than two weeks before his trial was set to begin, Butts pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Na'ziyah's death, along with several other sexual assault charges involving other minors. As a condition of his plea agreement, Butts was required to provide a truthful statement about the location of Na'ziyah's body. In March 2026, he was sentenced to 35 to 60 years in prison for her murder. Tragically, Na'ziyah's body has never been found. The case took another turn just two weeks after his sentencing when Jarvis Butts was found dead in his prison cell from an apparent suicide. This left Na'ziyah's family with the enduring pain of their loss and without the closure of bringing her home, as the specific information Butts provided about her location has not been publicly released.
