Jonathan Michael Christy, a 46-year-old resident of Vero Beach, Florida, has been missing since the afternoon of Saturday, October 14, 2023. He was last seen at approximately 2:30 p.m. swimming in the ocean near the 900 block of Reed Road in Vero Beach. At the time of his disappearance, Christy was at the beach with his wife, Jennifer Faletto. He was wearing gray board shorts and had goggles and a diving mask with him.
Christy was known to be a strong and avid swimmer who enjoyed regular workouts in the ocean. On the day he went missing, the surf forecast indicated a moderate risk of rip currents. His wife contacted emergency services when she could no longer see him in the water after about ten minutes. This prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Indian River County Fire Rescue.
The search for Christy covered nearly 400 square miles over 45 hours. Resources deployed included a 45-foot response boat, an MH-60 Jayhawk aircraft, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, and the 154-foot Cutter Bernard C. Webber. Despite the extensive efforts, Christy was not located, and the active search was suspended on the evening of Tuesday, October 17, 2023. While foul play is not suspected, authorities did investigate surveillance footage from the area.
Jonathan Michael Christy was a licensed professional counselor and a certified addiction counselor. He was a graduate of St. Edward's School in Vero Beach, Georgetown University, and Naropa University, where he earned a master's degree. He was described as a passionate road cyclist, swimmer, skier, and world traveler. Although he is presumed to have drowned, his body has never been recovered.Last Seen: Oct 14, 2023
