On December 3, 1983, three-month-old April Nicole Williams was abducted from a Trailways bus station in Washington, D.C. April and her mother, Eleanor Marie Williams, were traveling by bus from Suffolk, Virginia, to visit Eleanor's boyfriend in Kansas and had a three-hour layover in the city. At the station, a woman who introduced herself as "Latoya" struck up a conversation with Eleanor and asked to hold April.
The woman, still holding April, walked towards a nearby Hardee's restaurant, supposedly to buy a soda, but never came back. An alternative account states that "Latoya" offered to change the baby's diaper and disappeared after taking her to the restroom. Eleanor, who was 18 years old at the time and had never traveled far from her home in southeastern Virginia, was left distraught. The abduction of April Nicole Williams sparked a significant manhunt in Washington, D.C. history but she has never been found.
The suspected abductor, "Latoya," was described as a slender African American woman in her twenties, approximately 5'3" tall, with red, braided hair. She had a dark brown complexion with possible pigment spots on her face and two piercings in each ear. At the time of her disappearance, April was wearing a pink and white hooded snowsuit over a blue sleeper with a red number "1" on the front. She has a one-inch birthmark on her right wrist. Investigators believe that the kidnapper likely wanted to raise April as her own child. The case remains an unsolved non-family abduction.
