Tyrell S. Henderson, a 29-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 15, 2018, in Danville, Illinois. The incident occurred in the 2300 block of Cannon Street, where Danville Police responded to reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found Henderson lying on the ground, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported that several people were present in front of a house when the shooting took place.
The investigation quickly led to the
identification and arrest of Yuri Lillard, a 35-year-old male from Danville. Lillard was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just a few days after the shooting. He was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. The arrest warrant, issued by the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office, set Lillard's bond at $7 million.
In September 2019, Lillard pleaded guilty to an amended charge of first-degree murder. Circuit Judge Nancy Fahey sentenced him to 25 years in prison, with the requirement that he serve 100% of the sentence, followed by three years of mandatory supervised release. During the sentencing, Lillard expressed remorse and apologized to Henderson's family, including his mother. The case highlighted the swift action of law enforcement and the judicial system in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
