In the fall of 1973, 30-year-old bodybuilder Paul Rehus vanished after leaving his Los Angeles, California, residence to visit a friend in Washington, D.C. He sent a letter to a friend in Los Angeles indicating he would be returning home on September 20, 1973. However, when his friend went to meet him at the Los Angeles airport, Rehus was not on the flight and has not been seen or heard from since. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating his disappearance.
According to Rehus's friend in Washington D.C., he was last seen there on September 16, 1973. Rehus reportedly left Washington D.C. with the intention of traveling to New York City. It is believed he may have been heading to New York to compete in a bodybuilding contest. His plan was to return to Los Angeles following his trip to New York.
At the time of his disappearance, Paul Rehus was described as a White male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'8" and weighing approximately 185 pounds with a very muscular build. He was last seen wearing a multicolored shirt and beige pants and may have been carrying a briefcase. Just days before he went missing, Rehus, who was known as the "Iron Man from Behind the Iron Curtain," had placed third in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Mr. World competition held in New York City. Investigators have considered the possibility that he returned to New York for another competition, possibly the Mr. Fire Island contest.
