In June of 2023, John Starr Vang, a 34-year-old Hmong man, left his home in St. Paul, Minnesota, for a work opportunity in the remote area of Honeydew, California. His family last had contact with him in August 2023, and he has not been heard from since. Vang, described as being approximately 5'2" tall and weighing 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, never returned to his home in Minnesota. He has a distinguishing characteristic of a missing front tooth. While his last attire is unknown, he was known to typically wear a white t-shirt and black shorts.
Vang was in the Southern Humboldt area, and it is believed he was working on a marijuana farm on a rural property in the Panther Gap area near Honeydew at the time of his disappearance. Although his family last heard from him in August 2023, he was not officially reported as a missing person until March 2024.
The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office's Major Crimes Division is actively investigating Vang's disappearance and is seeking assistance from the public. Authorities have expressed interest in identifying three adult Hmong females who were seen with Vang at a Walmart in Eureka on August 14, 2023. They are also attempting to locate a Hispanic male known only as "Mateo," who is believed to have worked with Vang on the same farm. These individuals may have crucial information that could aid in the investigation. Anyone with information regarding John Starr Vang's whereabouts or who may have been in the Panther Gap area during the summer of 2023 is encouraged to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.
