In the late afternoon of June 20, 2025, concern began to grow for 75-year-old Steven Wright, a resident of Dallas, Oregon. A family member, unable to make contact with him, reached out to the Polk County Sheriff's Office to report him missing. The situation took a puzzling turn later that evening when Mr. Wright himself called a family member around 10:00 PM. He reported that he was near a road marker labeled "7.6.32.1," a seemingly specific clue that offered a glimmer of hope. He was believed to be driving his 1999 white Toyota 4Runner with Oregon license plate 946DFC. Concerns for his well-being were heightened as it was known that he had mild cognitive and medical conditions that could cause him to become confused. Acting swiftly on the information provided by the family, deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office began a search for the mysterious road marker. They were able to locate the specific marker within a few hours, but their hopes were dashed when they found no sign of Steven Wright or his vehicle at the location. The investigation then turned to technology to trace his movements. Telemetry data from his Toyota 4Runner indicated he had arrived in the Rickreall Creek area around 2:00 PM that day. His vehicle was tracked moving towards the Mercer Reservoir before it appeared to encounter an impassable section of road and turned back. The data then showed the vehicle returning to a gate that had reportedly been open earlier but was now believed to be closed. Further analysis of the vehicle's trip data and cell phone pings painted a picture of a man who was likely lost and disoriented. The data revealed several movements north and northwest along Burma Road, with the vehicle repeatedly returning to the vicinity of the closed gate. The final pieces of electronic evidence came in around 8:00 PM on June 20th. At this time, his cell phone last pinged near GPS coordinates 44.92095, -123.43023, and the final vehicle telemetry record showed his 4Runner at or near the gate location, corresponding with the time of the last phone ping. This was two hours before he made the phone call to his family mentioning the road marker. Despite the extensive search efforts by the Polk County Search and Rescue Team and appeals to the public for information, Steven Wright's whereabouts remain unknown. The case stands as a poignant reminder of the vulnerability of individuals with cognitive conditions and the heartbreaking mystery that can unfold in the rugged Oregon terrain.
