On March 4, 2025, a backcountry skiing trip in the mountains near Girdwood, Alaska, ended in tragedy for 39-year-old Charles Eppard and his two friends. The group, which included Jeremy Leif and David Linder, were on a heli-skiing excursion in the West Fork of the 20-mile river area when they were caught in a massive avalanche. The slide occurred around 3:30 p.m. and was described as enormous, fracturing about half a mile across and descending from an altitude of 3,500 feet to 700 feet. Guides with the commercial heli-skiing operation immediately initiated a rescue attempt after witnessing the event. They were able to detect signals from the men's avalanche beacons, but the signals indicated they were buried under 40 to 100 feet of snow and debris, making an immediate recovery impossible due to the depth and the ongoing risk of further avalanches.
The initial search and rescue efforts were quickly hampered by the dangerous conditions and waning daylight on the day of the avalanche. Alaska State Troopers were notified of the incident around 5:10 p.m., but the hazardous environment prevented any recovery operations that evening. Authorities announced early on that they did not believe any of the three men could have survived the incident. Poor weather conditions, including rain, wind, and fog, continued to stall aerial assessments and on-the-ground recovery attempts in the following days. The significant avalanche danger in the Chugach Mountains, where the incident occurred, persisted, with forecasters noting a weak, unstable layer of snow buried beneath the surface. This forced officials to wait for conditions to improve, a process they warned could take a significant amount of time.
Tragically, official reports later confirmed that Charles Eppard was located deceased. After months of waiting for safer conditions, recovery teams were able to return to the remote site. In early November, a helicopter crew with the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group recovered human remains from the avalanche area. These remains were transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office, which later positively identified them as Charles Eppard. His family was notified of the heartbreaking discovery. The remains of one of his companions, David Linder, had been found the previous month in a river logjam downstream from the slide area. The search for the third skier, Jeremy Leif, was reported to be ongoing amidst the challenging mountain terrain. The case, which began as a search for three missing men, concluded with the devastating confirmation of their passing in a powerful and unforgiving natural event.
