On the evening of Friday, March 14, 2025, 52-year-old Joseph Gagnon of Colchester, Vermont, was involved in a single-vehicle crash on the Burlington Beltline . His car veered off the road and crashed through fencing on the east side of the highway at approximately 7:44 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle abandoned and believed that Gagnon had fled on foot into the nearby wooded area. ,

Despite immediate search efforts by the Burlington Police Department, including the use of drones by the Emergency Response Unit, Gagnon was not located. Family members reported that they had not heard from him since the crash, which they found uncharacteristic. They indicated that Gagnon had intended to return home but never arrived. ,

In the days following his disappearance, loved ones organized search parties to aid in locating Gagnon. On Saturday, March 22, 2025, friends and family gathered at the Ethan Allen Homestead to search the area where he was last seen. Further volunteer efforts were coordinated for Tuesday, March 25, with participants meeting at the Ethan Allen Homestead bike path parking area. Volunteers were advised to wear rain boots and high-visibility gear to assist in the search. ,

The Burlington Police Department has assigned the case to its Detective Services Bureau for a more thorough investigation. As of now, there have been no confirmed sightings of Gagnon since the night of the crash. He is described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 140 pounds, and was last seen wearing a grey and black checkered coat, a camouflage hat, blue jeans, and work boots. , ,
