In the spring of 2023, a 49-year-old chef named Philip Douglas Harris vanished from the Hazel Dell area of Vancouver, Washington, sparking concern among his family and friends. The last confirmed sighting of him was on April 20, 2023. His ex-wife, with whom he maintained a friendship, last had contact with him on April 15 of that year. His disappearance became more troubling when his vehicle, a green 2016 Kia Soul, was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a Safeway at the Hazel Dell
Marketplace. Surveillance footage showed the car being parked around 8 p.m. on April 21, 2023. A store manager first noticed the car on May 9 but it wasn't reported and towed until May 30.
The discovery of Philip's car only deepened the mystery surrounding his whereabouts. Inside the vehicle were many of his personal belongings, including his chef's knives, clothing, a laptop, an Apple Watch, and his medication. Photos of his children were also found in the car. Crucially, his keys and phone were missing. The presence of his essential medication and other valuables suggested to some that he may have intended to return to his vehicle. In the days and weeks that followed, his former wife and concerned community members organized search parties and distributed flyers, particularly in areas with homeless encampments, though his ex-wife doubts he would have ended up in that situation.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into Philip's disappearance. Detectives have reviewed his social media, phone records, and other personal accounts in an effort to find any clues that might lead to his location. The case has been described as unusual, as it is rare for someone to vanish so completely with modern technology. Investigators have reached out to various recovery and housing organizations for any information. Philip is described as a white male, 5'7' tall, weighing between 145 and 155 pounds, with blue eyes and short brown hair. He has several distinctive tattoos, including full sleeves on both arms and a large semicolon on his left hand, and both of his ears are pierced.
