On August 16, 1972, 33-year-old Arthur Allen and his friend, 42-year-old Moses Mailailua Kahiapo, embarked on a fishing trip from Heeia Kea Pier in Kaneohe, Hawaii. They planned to troll for aku approximately 15 to 20 miles offshore in Allen's 17-foot boat. When they failed to return as expected, an extensive search was initiated. On October 3, 1972, the United States Coast Guard recovered their abandoned boat at sea, but neither Allen nor Kahiapo were found.
