On a summer day in late July of 1955, 30-year-old Ruby Mae Bosen, her husband Calvin Wayne Bosen, and her brother Clarence Delmer Simons, were enjoying an outing at Moon Lake in Duchesne County, Utah. They were accompanied by another married couple, A.G. and Lucy Smith. The group of five from Salt Lake City decided to rent a small aluminum boat from the Moon Lake Lodge to spend some time on the water.
The boat was equipped with two motors, one on the back and another on the side, a detail that witnesses later recalled. The sheriff would later state that the group was too large for the small vessel. Living in Salt Lake City, Ruby and Calvin were parents to two sons and a daughter.
As the afternoon wore on, the group was out on the deepest part of Moon Lake, where the water was estimated to be between 115 and 125 feet deep. According to reports, their trawling gear became entangled in one of the motors. Witnesses on the shore observed the boat, with both motors reportedly running, begin to swing in circles on the water's surface before it suddenly overturned and sank.
