Susan Powell, a 28-year-old mother of two, was last seen on December 7, 2009, in West Valley City, Utah. She was reported missing after failing to show up for work, and her husband, Josh Powell, claimed that she had left home earlier that night. According to Josh, he had taken their two sons, ages 2 and 4, on a spontaneous camping trip in the middle of a snowstorm to the remote Simpson Springs area.
Investigators immediately found his story suspicious, particularly since Susan’s personal items, including her purse and phone, were left behind at their home.
In the early days of the investigation, police uncovered disturbing details about the Powell household. Susan had expressed fears for her safety, documenting her concerns in journals and emails. She had written about the strained relationship with Josh, who had exhibited controlling and erratic behavior. Friends and family members later testified to Susan's increasing anxiety about her marriage and desire to leave. In February 2012, Josh killed himself and the couple’s two sons in a house explosion in Washington state during a supervised visit, further cementing suspicions of his involvement in Susan’s disappearance.
