In the quiet town of Vernal, Utah, the autumn of 1987 brought with it a mystery that would linger for decades, leaving a family with unanswered questions and a community with a sense of unease. On the evening of September 28th, 31-year-old Rhonda Fae Karren was last seen at approximately 10:30 p.m. after dropping off a coworker in Salt Lake City. She had attended a two-day K-Mart management meeting and was believed to have returned to her home in Vernal.
The following morning, Rhonda was scheduled to open the local K-Mart at 7:30 a.m., a commitment she would never fulfill. When she failed to arrive for her shift, concern began to grow, and later that day, she was reported missing.
Upon entering Rhonda's home, investigators were met with a scene that immediately suggested a violent encounter. There were clear signs of a struggle, with items in the house knocked out of place. In the yard, there were drag marks, and Rhonda's shoes and jacket were found discarded on the ground. Inside her residence, a number of her personal belongings were discovered, including her purse, house and car keys, and perhaps most tellingly, her cigarettes. Friends and family knew Rhonda as a chain smoker who would never willingly go anywhere without them.
