Vilate Kerreen Young, a 15-month-old toddler, disappeared on July 4, 1956, during a family picnic at her maternal grandfather's ranch, the Newell Steed Ranch, near Widtsoe, Utah. Vilate and her family, originally from Monteview, Idaho, had traveled to the ranch to celebrate Independence Day. While at the picnic, Vilate was last seen watching a relative churn ice cream near one of the farm's outbuildings. Shortly after, she wandered away and was never seen again.
An extensive search was conducted involving bloodhounds, airplanes, and local authorities. Although they scoured the surrounding area, only her teddy bear was found near where she was last seen. The bloodhounds traced her scent to a nearby rural road, leading to speculation that she may have been picked up by a passing motorist. Despite draining an irrigation canal and cutting nearby alfalfa fields, no further traces of Vilate were ever discovered.
The case remains unsolved to this day, and Vilate is one of Utah's oldest missing person cases. Authorities continue to seek information that might shed light on her disappearance, but the circumstances surrounding the case are still unknown.
