On a fall evening in 1986, a 26-year-old mother named Erica Jayne Franolich was last seen in the small town of Middleburgh, New York. It was approximately 9:00 p.m. on October 13th, in the vicinity of Main Street and Railroad Avenue, when the young woman from Michigan seemingly vanished. At the time of her disappearance, Erica was described as being 5'4" tall and weighing around 100 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She had a few distinguishing features, including a mole on her left knee and upper front teeth that protruded slightly. When she was last seen, she was reportedly wearing a baggy shirt and blue denim overalls. Erica's life in the period leading up to her disappearance was marked by instability and turmoil, largely centered around her troubled relationship with her husband, Richard. Originally from Michigan, Erica had moved to Duanesburg, New York, with Richard and their young son. However, the relationship was fraught with difficulties, and during the summer of 1986, Richard took their son and moved to New York while Erica returned to her family in Michigan. She later went to New York in an attempt to get her son back and reportedly reconciled with her husband. The situation remained tense, and in a chilling phone call to her brother in Michigan in October 1986, Erica confessed that she was afraid for her life and wanted to leave again. She promised to call him the next day to make arrangements, but that call never came. Despite the ominous final conversation with her brother, Erica Franolich was not officially reported as a missing person until February 1987, several months after she was last seen. The report was filed by her concerned family in Michigan who had not heard from her. Shortly after Erica's disappearance, her husband and son moved to Vermont. The investigation into her vanishing has been ongoing for decades, with the New York State Police continuing to seek information from the public. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance, which remains unsolved. The case is a lingering mystery, a story of a young mother who expressed a deep fear for her safety and then was never heard from again, leaving her family with unanswered questions and an enduring sense of loss.
