The suspect, described as a man in his early twenties with long dirty-blonde hair, a pockmarked face, and driving a battered tan or gold sedan, eluded authorities for decades. Thousands of leads were pursued, but the case remained unsolved. Several suspects were considered over the years, including notorious figures like Timothy Bindner and the Speed Freak Killers, but no concrete evidence linked them to Michaela's disappearance.
In December 2020, after 32 years, authorities made a breakthrough when a partial fingerprint found on Michaela's scooter was matched to David Misch, a convicted murderer already serving time for other crimes. Misch was charged with her kidnapping and murder, though Michaela's body has not been found.
