He was reported missing by his grandmother later that day when she discovered that he was no longer in his room. Cortlen was last seen wearing a blue basketball shirt and matching shorts. Authorities issued an Endangered/Missing Child Alert, as Cortlen was diagnosed with autism, which could affect his ability to make decisions in potentially dangerous situations.
Over the following weeks, extensive search efforts were conducted in the areas surrounding Leakesville, including the use of drones and grid searches. Investigators followed several leads, but no major breakthroughs were made. On October 3, 2023, human remains were discovered in a pond just outside the city limits of Leakesville. Nearby, search teams found personal items, including a cap with Cortlen's name on it. Although DNA results were pending, local officials were confident that the remains belonged to Cortlen. His death is believed to have been a tragic accident, and foul play is not suspected.
