This peaceful day took a tragic turn when an eyewitness, looking through a telescope from across the Ohio River, saw a man abduct her at gunpoint. The man reportedly grabbed Heather by her hair and forcibly dragged her into a wooded area nearby. The witness described the assailant as a white male, approximately six feet tall and weighing between 210 and 230 pounds, with brown hair and a bushy beard. He was said to be wearing jeans without a shirt and had a mosquito net over his head. Following the abduction report, law enforcement initiated a search of the area, which led to the discovery of a piece of Heather's red plaid bathing suit.

The investigation into Heather's disappearance quickly focused on a local resident named Marvin 'Marty' Dill. A vehicle matching the description of Dill's red and white Ford Bronco was seen parked next to Heather's car at the beach. Earlier that year, a traffic stop involving Dill had revealed suspicious items in his vehicle, including guns, knives, rope, duct tape, and rubber gloves. When police went to Dill's home to question him about Heather's case just days after her disappearance, he sent his wife away before taking his own life. A search of his property yielded no trace of Heather. The case was presented to a grand jury, but Dill's wife invoked her Fifth Amendment rights and declined to answer questions. Heather's mother has since voiced doubts about Dill being the perpetrator, pointing to descriptions of him as being bald and clean-shaven at the time, which contradicts the eyewitness account.
