On August 19, 1998, a 34-year-old woman named Anna Scivetti vanished after leaving her job in New York, marking the beginning of a distressing and unresolved case. An aspiring singer, Anna was at a pivotal moment in her life, actively trying to start fresh. She had recently secured a new job as a receptionist and was on the verge of moving into a new apartment in the Tottenville area of Staten Island. That evening, she had plans to meet her new roommate for dinner and then pay the landlord for her new residence. Anna was last seen leaving her workplace at Ferrar Foods in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Traffic records confirm she drove her blue/gray 1988 Mazda over the Outerbridge Crossing, returning to Staten Island where she lived. However, she never made it to her appointments and has not been seen or heard from since. The circumstances leading up to Anna's disappearance were fraught with turmoil, primarily centered around her volatile, four-year relationship with a man named Charles Chorman. Anna was reportedly trying to permanently end her sporadic involvement with Chorman, who she had discovered was married with a child. The relationship had a documented history of violence; in 1997, Chorman was arrested for assaulting Anna, leading her to obtain an order of protection against him. Despite this, phone records indicate that the last call Anna made on the day she disappeared was to Chorman. In a series of troubling events prior to her vanishing, a new apartment she had secured burned down in what was described as a "suspicious" incident. It was uncharacteristic for Anna to disappear without a word, as she left her beloved dog unattended and $1,000 in cash in her temporary apartment. The investigation into Anna Scivetti's disappearance quickly focused on Charles Chorman. The morning after she was last seen, Chorman was observed with scratches on his face and hands. Compounding suspicion, Chorman was also linked to the 1993 disappearance of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bump, with whom he was rumored to have been romantically involved.
