On August 26, 1998, in New Hyde Park, New York, 20-year-old Yim Yeung Tsui, known to his loved ones as Jimmy, was seen for the last time. His older sister, Victoria, checked on him around 8:30 a.m. before she left for work and saw him asleep in his bed. This ordinary morning would tragically become the beginning of a long and painful mystery for the Tsui family. At the time of his disappearance, Yim was a student at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, where he was about to start his junior year. Having emigrated from southern China with his family in 1988, Yim had faced challenges adjusting to his new life in the United States. His family described him as a shy and introverted young man who, despite finding it difficult to acclimate to a new country and language, had successfully graduated from New Hyde Park Memorial High School. He was not known to have a history of running away or getting into trouble. The circumstances surrounding Yim's disappearance are shrouded in uncertainty. At the time he went missing, his parents were on a trip to Australia, and another sister resided in Hawaii. After he vanished, his family was shocked to receive a letter from SUNY Stony Brook stating that he had been expelled due to poor academic performance. This was a stark contrast to what Yim had led them to believe about his progress in college. He was enrolled in summer classes that were scheduled to end just two days after he was last seen. Described as 5'10" and 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, Yim wore eyeglasses and was last seen in blue jeans. There were no clear indications of where he might have gone, and he left behind a family who loved him dearly. The years following Yim Tsui's disappearance have been marked by unending grief and a desperate search for answers for his family. His mother fell into a deep depression, and for a long time, his name was too painful to mention in their home. The family has held onto the hope that he might one day return, which has kept his parents from leaving the New Hyde Park area. A moment of renewed anguish came in April 2011, when investigators exploring a series of unsolved homicides found the remains of an Asian male along Ocean Parkway. The Tsui family endured an agonizing wait, only to be informed through DNA testing that the remains were not Yim's. The case of Yim Yeung Tsui's disappearance remains an open and unsolved investigation. His family continues to hope for any information that might bring them closure and end their long period of uncertainty.
