Emma Frances Tresp, a 71-year-old woman from North Little Rock, Arkansas, went missing on August 31, 1998, while on her way to a religious retreat at the Benedictine Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe near Pecos, New Mexico. She had left her daughter's home in Stillwater, Oklahoma, earlier that day and was last seen stopping for gas at approximately 3:00 PM in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Despite being familiar with the route, Emma never arrived at her destination.
On September 13, 1998, her white 1997 Honda Civic was found abandoned on Forest Road 375, about 10-15 miles from State Route 63 in a heavily wooded area of the Santa Fe National Forest. The vehicle was locked and had become stuck on a large rock, which had damaged its oil pan. Most of her belongings were inside the car, but her purse was missing. Authorities believe that she may have left the vehicle to seek help, but no trace of her has ever been found despite extensive searches.
Emma was described as being mentally sharp, though she was known to get lost easily while driving. Her family, upon realizing she had not arrived at the monastery, searched for her themselves, reporting her missing on September 8, 1998. She was a deeply religious Catholic who enjoyed traveling, making her disappearance even more baffling to her family and investigators.
