Debra "Debbie" Melo, a 30-year-old mother of two from Taunton, Massachusetts, went missing on June 20, 2000. That day, Debbie had attended a doctor's appointment with her husband, Luis Melo, and the two reportedly got into an argument while driving back home along Route 18 in Weymouth. According to Luis, Debbie asked to be let out of the car after their argument, and he complied.
He claimed he drove away briefly and then returned to where he had dropped her off, but Debbie was no longer there. She has not been seen or heard from since.
Luis waited between one and three days to report her missing, and Debbie’s phone, wallet, and identification were later found in his vehicle. The couple had a history of marital issues, with Debbie having previously filed for a restraining order against Luis in 1996, citing threats of harm. At the time of her disappearance, Debbie was reportedly planning to file for divorce and seek custody of their children.
Extensive searches in the Weymouth and Taunton areas, as well as a later investigation of a home in Taunton in 2017, have yielded no concrete evidence regarding Debbie’s whereabouts. While Luis Melo is considered a person of interest and reportedly failed two polygraph tests, no charges have been brought against him, and no definitive evidence has been found linking him to her disappearance. Debbie’s family remains convinced that she would never have willingly left her children and continue to search for answers in the decades since her disappearance.
