In early February 2002, 42-year-old Catherine "Cathy" Nelson and her fiancé, Charles "Chuck" Russell, were living in Phoenix, Arizona, sharing a passion for vintage cars and motorcycles. This shared interest led them to an advertisement for a 2002 Ducati motorcycle for sale in Tucson. On February 2, 2002, the couple embarked on a trip to Tucson, carrying a cashier's check with the intention of purchasing the motorcycle. They were traveling in their newer model red Ford SVT Lightning F-150 pickup truck. This would be the last time their loved ones would hear from them. When both Catherine and Charles failed to show up for work on February 4th, they were reported missing. The couple's red Ford F-150 truck was discovered abandoned on February 7, 2002, in the parking lot of the Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Tucson. Inside the glove compartment, investigators found Charles Russell's checkbook, but there were no other signs of a struggle or any additional evidence within the vehicle. Friends and family found their sudden disappearance highly uncharacteristic, noting that they had left their dog unattended at their Phoenix home, something they would not have done if they had planned an extended trip. Investigators later determined that the advertisement for the Ducati motorcycle was likely a deceptive ploy, as only two such motorcycles had been delivered to Arizona before their disappearance. This led to the theory that the couple was lured to Tucson with the intent of being robbed. For years, the case remained cold with no significant leads. However, the investigation was reopened, and in January 2015, authorities arrested Brian Ferry, a man with a prior criminal record for fraud and auto theft, in connection with the couple's disappearance. Forensic evidence played a key role in his arrest. Ferry's first trial in early 2018 resulted in a mistrial due to a hung jury. He was tried a second time later that year and was convicted in May 2018 on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Catherine Nelson and Charles Russell. The following month, while awaiting sentencing, Brian Ferry was found deceased in his jail cell, with his death ruled a suicide. Despite the conviction, the bodies of Catherine Nelson and Charles Russell have never been found. The case is a tragic story of a couple who fell victim to a violent crime under the guise of a shared passion, leaving their families with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
