In the late summer of 2002, a 53-year-old U.S. Marine veteran named Celia Darlene Barnes, who often went by her middle name Darlene, was navigating a difficult period in her life. Residing in Merlin, Oregon, she was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma, a diagnosis she had received earlier that year. Despite her health challenges, Darlene remained an experienced hiker.
