Hyun Jong Song, a 21-year-old Pennsylvania State University senior known to her friends as Cindy, disappeared on November 1, 2001, from State College, Pennsylvania. On the night of her disappearance, she had attended a Halloween party at a downtown nightclub with friends. Dressed in a bunny costume, she and her friends left the club around 2:00 a.m. and went to another friend's apartment for a couple of hours. A friend then dropped her off at her apartment complex, the State College Park Apartments, at approximately 4:00 a.m. Evidence found inside her apartment, including her backpack and the false eyelashes she had been wearing, indicated that she made it inside. However, her purse, keys, and the bunny costume were missing. Friends became concerned and reported her missing on November 4th when she failed to show up for her job and they were unable to contact her. The investigation into Hyun Jong Song's disappearance was met with few leads. There were no signs of a struggle or forced entry at her apartment. Her cell phone, which was found in her apartment, was turned off and showed no activity after she was dropped off. Theories about what happened to her varied. Some speculated she may have walked to a nearby 24-hour supermarket, a common habit of hers, though surveillance footage from the store had been taped over before police could review it. Another theory explored the possibility that her disappearance was related to drug activity, as her diary mentioned experimentation with marijuana and Ecstasy, but this was eventually deemed unlikely as there was no evidence she had used drugs that night. A tip emerged a short time after she vanished from a woman in Philadelphia who claimed to have seen someone matching Song's description being forced into a vehicle in Chinatown; however, the witness's story changed multiple times, and the lead could not be verified. A significant development in the case came years later when an informant linked her disappearance to Hugo Selenski, a man later convicted of other murders. The informant claimed that Selenski and an accomplice had abducted and killed Song. A search of Selenski's property uncovered the remains of multiple individuals, but none were identified as Hyun Jong Song. While Selenski was considered a person of interest, a definitive link to Song's case has never been established. The investigation into her disappearance remains open, and despite the passage of time, her case continues to be an active and unresolved mystery for the Ferguson Township Police Department. The lack of concrete evidence and the conflicting theories have left her family and the community searching for answers. The case serves as a somber reminder of the enduring pain and uncertainty that surrounds a missing loved one.
