Bradford T. Turek, a 28-year-old man from Cincinnati, Ohio, was on vacation in Hawaii when he disappeared in late January 2004. His family and friends describe him as a kind-hearted, athletic, and intelligent individual. However, he was also living with bipolar disorder and required medication, which he may not have had with him, potentially leaving him disoriented. His journey began on Maui, where he rented a white 2004 Jeep and checked into a hotel on January 23.
The following day, the Jeep was found abandoned in the hotel's parking lot, and some of his personal belongings were discovered submerged in the hotel's pond. It is believed that he then flew to the island of Kauai on January 25, where he rented another vehicle.
Upon arriving in Kauai, it is thought that Bradford Turek made his way to the North Shore and began hiking the Kalalau Trail at Ke'e Beach. The second rental car was discovered on January 27 near the trailhead by the Kalalau Bridge. An investigation by private detectives hired by his family suggested that another man may have accompanied him for the first mile of the trail. Searches of the area uncovered a few potential clues, though their connection to Bradford is not definitive. His initials were found carved into a bamboo tree near an old coffee mill in Hanakapi'ai. A t-shirt from Duke University, his alma mater, was also found submerged in the Hanakapi'ai Stream. While some theories suggest he may have fallen into the stream and been swept out to sea, his family has expressed doubts that the shirt belonged to him.
Despite extensive search efforts by law enforcement and private investigators, no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced to explain what happened to Bradford Turek. The difficult terrain of the Napali Coast, known for its steep cliffs and dense valleys, presented significant challenges to search teams. The family, desperate for answers, offered a $10,000 reward for any information regarding his whereabouts. Over the years, his case has grown cold, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions and the enduring pain of not knowing his fate.
