Ronald Henry Tammen was a 19-year-old sophomore at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, when he vanished from his dormitory room on the night of April 19, 1953. A responsible and well-liked student, he was a member of the varsity wrestling team, played string bass in a campus dance band, and served as a resident hall advisor in Fisher Hall. The evening he disappeared, Tammen had requested new bedsheets around 8:00 p.m. after a prankster put a fish in his bed. He was last seen by a fellow student around 8:30 p.m., reportedly studying a psychology textbook in his room. When his roommate returned at about 10:30 p.m., he found the room in a peculiar state: the lights were on, the radio was playing, and Tammen's personal belongings, including his wallet, keys, and watch, were left behind. A psychology book lay open on his desk, despite it being a snowy night, his coat remained in the room. The initial search for Tammen was extensive, involving campus security, local police, and hundreds of students who scoured the area, but no trace of him was ever found. His car remained parked on campus, adding to the perplexing nature of his disappearance. Investigators initially considered the theory that he may have developed amnesia and wandered off. This idea was bolstered by a report from a woman in Seven Mile, Ohio, about eight miles from the university, who claimed a young man matching Tammen's description came to her door early on the morning of April 20. The man appeared dazed and confused, with dirt on his cheek, and asked for directions to the nearest bus stop before leaving on foot. However, it was later confirmed that the local bus service had been suspended that night. Over the decades, the case has grown cold, but several strange details and theories have kept it from being forgotten. Five months before he vanished, Tammen had visited the Butler County Coroner's office to request a blood test, a highly unusual request that the coroner had not encountered in his 35 years of practice. Theories about his fate are wide-ranging and include the possibility of foul play, a mental breakdown due to academic pressure, or even involvement with secret government activities during the Cold War. Despite renewed interest and investigations, including a DNA comparison in 2009 with an unidentified body found in Georgia that did not yield a match, no conclusive evidence has ever surfaced to explain what happened to Ronald Tammen. The demolition of Fisher Hall in 1978 provided another opportunity to search for clues, but nothing was found in the rubble. His disappearance remains one of Ohio's most enduring and baffling unsolved mysteries, leaving his surviving family and a captivated public without answers.
