In the winter of 2022, 51-year-old Roger Shane Bruce of Felicity, Ohio, was reported missing, initiating a complex and lengthy investigation that would ultimately span across multiple counties. Bruce was last seen by an acquaintance in Clermont County, and his family officially reported him missing to the Brown County Sheriff's Office on January 23, 2022. The initial report triggered an immediate response from law enforcement, who began the arduous task of piecing together the final known moments of Bruce's life. The investigation quickly focused on Zachary Scott, the last known person to have seen Bruce. Scott's account of the events surrounding Bruce's disappearance would prove to be inconsistent and obstructive to the investigation. The search for Roger Bruce involved numerous law enforcement agencies and search and rescue teams. Multiple resources, including aerial units, K-9 teams, and a dive team, were deployed to scour various locations in Washington Township. In June 2022, the efforts were bolstered by the Texas EquuSearch and Recovery Team, who, along with Bruce's family and the Clermont County Sheriff's Office, conducted extensive searches of several areas. Despite these exhaustive efforts, the searches were unsuccessful in locating Bruce. Throughout the investigation, detectives interviewed Zachary Scott on multiple occasions. His changing stories led to charges of obstructing official business and falsification. At one point, while incarcerated on these charges, Scott offered a new potential location for Bruce's body, which turned out to be false, leading to further charges of falsification and tampering with evidence. The case took a significant turn in September 2022 when a Clermont County Grand Jury indicted Zachary Scott on multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and gross abuse of a corpse. It was alleged that Scott had provided the drugs that led to Bruce's death. In September 2023, Scott entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, which resulted in a five-year prison sentence. The search for Bruce tragically concluded in the spring of 2025 when human remains were discovered in the area of Barger Road in Clermont County. With the assistance of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, DNA analysis confirmed the remains belonged to Roger Shane Bruce. The discovery of his remains brought a somber end to a years-long search, providing some measure of closure to his family and community. The investigation into the circumstances of his death continued even after the discovery. This case highlights the persistent efforts of law enforcement and the profound impact of a missing person's case on their loved ones, culminating in a sad resolution that nonetheless answered the painful question of his whereabouts.
