When Grant failed to appear for the planned meeting, and could not be reached, the worry for his well-being intensified. Described as an Asian male, standing between 6 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 110 to 120 pounds, Grant had black hair, black eyes, and distinctive tattoos on his arms and chest. He did not have a vehicle at the time of his disappearance, a detail that added to the troubling circumstances of his case. The Coralville Police Department was notified and began an investigation into his whereabouts.
The search for Grant continued for many months, leaving his family and community anxious for answers. The Coralville Police Department conducted searches and canvassed the area where he was last seen, near 1st Avenue and Holiday Road, but these initial efforts did not lead to his discovery. The investigation remained active, with authorities seeking any information that could help locate him. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were considered concerning, and his case was entered into the Iowa Missing Person Information Clearinghouse as the search for him continued.
Regrettably, the search came to a sad conclusion nearly three years later. On July 8, 2026, the Coralville Police responded to a report of a possible human bone found in the 1700 block of 8th Street. Subsequent searches of the area led to the recovery of additional human remains. On July 29, 2026, the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office formally notified the Coralville Police that the remains had been positively identified as Grant Leonard through the use of dental records. In a statement, the police department expressed that while they were grateful to provide answers to Grant's family, it was not the outcome anyone had hoped for. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains ongoing, and an official cause of death has not been released. This case began with a young man who unexpectedly missed a family gathering and evolved into a years-long search that ended with the heartbreaking discovery of his remains, bringing a difficult and sorrowful resolution to his family.
